Salicilin was discovered in 1829: the Europeans identified the active medicinal ingredient in white willow bark.
It is believed that white willow bark could be more effective than aspirin because of other active bio-compounds found in the bark.
Synthetic version of salicylic acid was developed later and became known as aspirin.
White willow bark indeed contains salicin, a compound chemically similar to salicylic acid.
Salicin appears to help prevent the production of prostaglandins.
